Healthy Eating on a Budget
It can be difficult to source healthy ingredients and harder still to do it while maintaining a limited budget. We have created this page to help our patient’s and readers find affordable solutions so they may follow a healthier way of eating without stressing themselves about the cost. Please take a moment to see if any of the companies below may help you in achieving your health goals.
Thrive Market – Often described as Costco meets Whole Foods, Thrive Market operates on an annual membership basis and offer significant discounts. They offer the most popular canned and dry goods you might find at the local Coop or Whole Foods, but at a fraction of the cost. We get many of our staples from Thrive and at the end of the year they let you know how much you saved. I can tell you that we saved over $600 the first year we tried them!
Vital Proteins – The health food/supplement industry is filled with various types of protein supplements, but at our clinic we recommend Vital Proteins almost exclusively. The reason is because their protein powders contain healthy sources of collagen in addition to highly absorbable amino acids. Collagen is essential for healthy connective tissue; such as hair, skin and nails. We carry several of their products in our dispensary at 20% off!
Real Plans – While not a store with discounted food items, Real Plans can save you the frustration of having to figure out what to cook. Often times we recommend diets that are somewhat limiting and being able to figure out how to shop and cook for this new diet can either make or break your dietary goals. Real Plans offers subscriptions to receive recipes complete with grocery lists for traditional, paleo, autoimmune paleo, vegan/vegetarian diets, or custom diets.
US Wellness Meats – Finding high quality ethically raised animal meats can be difficult depending on where you live. Even if you can find healthy meat products where you live, the variety of cuts and prepared meats can be limited. US Wellness Meats offers anything from rib-eye steaks to braunschweiger using animals ethically raised with good healthy diets. Online stores like this can be essential to those on Paleo and Autoimmune diets.
Butcher Box – Similar to a CSA for vegetables, Butcher Box offers ethically raised meats delivered each month right to your door step. If you’re not interested in shopping for your meats in the store or online this can save you frustration. You can choose all-beef, mixed, beef/pork, and beef/chicken boxes. Butcher Box starts at $129 a box and comes with 7-10 lbs of meat, which is enough for at least 20 individual size meals (at a 5 – 8oz portion size). The price works out to $6.50/meal and shipping is free to the contiguous 48 states!
